Canggu Or Seminyak: Which is Worth Visiting in 2024?

If you’re looking for a beachside getaway in Bali, then your search will most likely lead you to the two most popular spots: Canggu or Seminyak. Two most famed destinations just a walk away from each other, catering to specific crowds and vibes.

And if you’re pressed for time with only one destination to choose from, then check out our quick guide to help your itinerary planning.

A Brief Guide To Canggu

Canggu has quickly risen as a top contender for best beaches in Bali! Before becoming a vibrant destination, this little beach town is loved for its pristine landscapes, with rice paddies nestled between boutiques and cafes, and black sand beaches for unforgettable sunsets.

With recent developments, you can still see these views even as Canggu is transformed into a paradise for digital nomads and bliss-seekers from all over the world with the rise of trendy brunch spots and coffee shops for foodies. The rising number of laidback beach clubs and unique day clubs are also a favorite among paradise-seekers.

A Brief Guide To Seminyak

Known for its high-end establishments for visitors looking for a more refined experience, Seminyak was and still is the top lifestyle destination. Just a stone’s throw away from Canggu, Seminyak is often recognized as one of the best places to party, with a lineup of buzzing clubs along the strip.

In the day, you can enjoy a nice stroll around boutiques and curated stores around Seminyak street, from clothes, furnitures, to handmade accessories! And when night comes, the street come alive with pumping beats.

Seminyak & Canggu Distance

Seminyak and Canggu are nestled on the South coast of Bali, along with other popular destinations like Kuta and Legian all connected by the same stretch of sand and sea. You can definitely walk back and forth from Seminyak to Canggu via the beach during low or high tide.

Both Seminyak and Canggu are approximately 45 minutes away from the Ngurah Rai International Airport, although Canggu is a little further past Canggu. But always add an extra fifteen minutes or so for traffic during rush hour.

What to do in Canggu

Often known as the hipster haven, Canggu is filled with trendy cafes with signature brunches and super casual comfort. It’s laidback ambiance is what draws in people from all over the world, from surfers to digital nomads amidst bliss-seekers.

Beach bound

The most popular thing to do in Canggu is surfing, thanks to their wicked waves that are still beginner-friendly such as Batu Bolong beach or Echo beach. The area was developed in the first place to accommodate the rising number of surfers coming to look for new waves instead of high-end tourism.

Brunch culture

Partly due to the surf and sports culture emerging in Canggu, most brunch spots in Canggu lean heavily towards clean eating and healthy, organic menus to support a healthy lifestyle. You’ve got smoothie bowls, avo on toast, and acai in everything! But, you can still find killer coffees and decadent breakfast classics to satisfy  your senses.

Beach club experience

With some of the best sunset views, there are a few great beach clubs that you should definitely visit.  Café del Mar Bali is a definite must-visit, an iconic beachfront playground inspired by the stunning aesthetics of Ibiza.

What to do in Seminyak

Many will agree that Seminyak is for the shopaholics, with their boutiques and curated stores. While that may be true, Seminyak is more than just that. They arguably cater to a more high-end crowd for those looking for a more refined experience, inviting a different crowd than the ones in Canggu, or Ubud.

Shop til you drop

As aforementioned, shopping comes to the top of mind when it comes to Seminyak. Small concept stores and even international brands stand next door to each other. There’s even a shopping mall, Seminyak Village, for when you want to cool down from the island sun while still window-shopping.

You’ll mostly find island wear, from stylish sarongs, designer linens to sustainable bikinis and comfy swimwear. But you can also find fabulous fits that are perfect for a night out on the town.

Nightlife exploration

A long time ago, Kuta would have been the champion for this title as the number one party central. Today, you can find a variety of club experiences all over Bali. The Seminyak strip is often the go-to for those looking to go club-hopping.

You can walk along Seminyak street and watch the night come alive, from La Favela, Motel, Woo Bar, ShiShi, and more, all in one street! Or if you prefer a laidback night out, you can opt for a relaxing dinner in one of the stunning restaurants. For instance, Midaz Bali offers unmissable grilled delicacies to enjoy as live music serenades you.

Sunsets

Seminyak is still the perfect spot for sunset-chasers, with warm black sands and unobstructed views of stunning sunsets along the Seminyak beach. With beachside restaurants or local stalls, you can immerse yourself in iconic views by the sea.

Where to stay in Bali — Canggu or Seminyak?

Both Canggu and Seminyak offer an equally diverse types of stays depending on your budget—from hostels, villas, even luxury stays. Are you planning on staying in a cozy hotel or are you looking for a place to drop your things before exploring the island?

Stay in Seminyak

Seminyak is probably the go-to area if you’re looking for a luxurious stay in high-rise hotels. Alila Seminyak and  W Hotel are renowned hotel chains nestled perfectly in the heart of Seminyak, with direct access to the vibrant strip for a day of exploration or a night of indulgence. Then, return for a good night’s rest or a relaxing spa day!

You can also find villas and hostels that are more fitted for your budget, such as homestays or even capsule hotels perfect for backpackers for as cheap as $20 a night.

Stay in Canggu

Canggu is often known for its private luxury villas and budget accommodations. There’s a fewer number of high-rise hotels, so you’ll most likely find two-tiered hotels with just as first-class amenities and facilities.

Just like Seminyak, you can find a range of prices depending on what you’re looking for. The good news is that in this neighborhood, you’ll almost certainly never run out of brunch spots (and gyms to burn off those morning calories), before lounging in one of the cozy beachclubs like Café del Mar Bali.

Plus, Canggu is quickly rising into the most favorable neighborhood for digital nomads with the number of co-working spaces.

How much does it cost to hang out in Seminyak or Canggu?

It all depends on your financial flexibility. Both Seminyak and Canggu are worth-visiting when you’re on the island. But it all boils down to your itinerary.

If you’re looking for a laidback experience with a light bite and some coffee, then Canggu is the best place to take your time. Explore the roads less travelled and discover hidden gems as you ride along the road, admiring lively neighborhoods, serene beaches, and lush greeneries all in one.

If you’re looking for a more exciting memory, then Seminyak is calling. Due to its location that’s conveniently located still close to the main roads, you can easily go to and from Seminyak, ending your day with a delightful cocktail and groovy jams in the nightclubs, or indulge in a delicious culinary experience.

So Seminyak or Canggu — which is better?

It’s a tough competition, we agree! They are both great destinations that are conveniently neighboring areas.  But, for the sake of your itinerary, we suggest investing more time in exploring Canggu.

You can drive through Seminyak to get a feel of the ambiance before heading straight through Batu Belig and into the Canggu neighborhood, where you are greeted by Café del Mar Bali, waiting just around the corner!

  • First time here and the ambience didn’t disappoint. Our service staff - Cynthia, was really helpful. Helped take a bunch of pictures around the area to capture the best sunsets. We had some snacks (wings & calamari) and churros. All were pretty good. The dipping sauce for the calamari was alittle salty but it was better with the sauce from the wings. :) Happy hour starts at 7pm and it’s really good value. We were there from 430pm - 8pm.

  • One of the best days I’ve had in a long time! Came with friends and booked a pool day bed which Is definitely worthy it. The cocktails were the best we had in Bali. The food was also incredible. I highly recommend the Philly cheesesteak. Chilled tunes playing all day and when the sun goes down the music kicks up a notch. Absolute perfection. Take me back.

  • My recent visit to this place was an absolute delight, from the warm and inviting ambience to the genuinely friendly and welcoming staff who made me feel right at home. Even the security staff, Dika, went out of his way to offer his assistance and create a welcoming atmosphere. One of the highlights of my stay was my first experience joining the bachata class, which was expertly led and thoroughly enjoyable. And, to top it all off, the sirloin steak I ordered was nothing short of delicious. Needless to say, I will definitely be returning to this wonderful establishment in the future.
